Environmental psychology explores the relationship between people and the environments they inhabit, from homes, workplaces, and cities to ecosystems and the natural world. It examines how people perceive environmental risk, form relationships with place, respond to changing conditions, and act within systems that can enable, constrain, or produce environmental outcomes. The Default Dilemma
Why environmental behavior depends on what systems make easy, profitable, normal, and possible
People and organizations make environmental decisions within systems of incentives, infrastructure, regulation, markets, and established ways of working. Those conditions can support climate-aligned action, but they can also reward practices that carry environmental costs elsewhere. Looking beyond personal intention raises a larger question: what behaviors do our systems repeatedly make rational, convenient, or economically advantageous, and what would need to change for different choices to become possible?

The conditions that make a place livable can be altered or destroyed through interconnected human decisions, systems, and events. Armed conflict and bombardment can damage ecosystems, contaminate land and water, destroy the infrastructure that sustains everyday life, and force people from places to which identity, memory, culture, and livelihood are tied. Extraction, pollution, and human-driven climate change can transform environments through other pathways, sometimes compounding one another. Environmental psychology helps us examine what these disruptions mean when human wellbeing, place, and ecological wellbeing are understood as deeply interconnected.

The Geography of Consequence
How global systems separate where environmental benefits are consumed from where environmental costs are carried
Modern life depends on relationships between places that can be easy to overlook. Raw materials may be extracted in one region, transformed elsewhere, consumed thousands of miles away, and leave environmental consequences concentrated in communities with very different levels of economic and political power. Climate change adds another layer, as exposure to heat, flooding, drought, ecological loss, and displacement is unevenly distributed. Making these connections visible helps reveal environmental impact not as a series of isolated events, but as outcomes moving through deeply interconnected human and ecological systems.
