The conditions that make a place livable can be altered or destroyed through interconnected human decisions, systems, and events. Armed conflict and bombardment can damage ecosystems, contaminate land and water, destroy the infrastructure that sustains everyday life, and force people from places to which identity, memory, culture, and livelihood are tied. Extraction, pollution, and human-driven climate change can transform environments through other pathways, sometimes compounding one another.
Environmental psychology helps hold these dimensions together. It asks what environmental change means for perception, health, identity, belonging, agency, and the possibility of continuing to live well in a place.
Several pathways, overlapping consequences
Environmental destruction does not have a single cause or a single timescale.
Armed conflict is one pathway. The United Nations describes how conflict can damage ecosystems and the environmental foundations of human security, including water, energy, sanitation, land, and food systems. The consequences may continue after active fighting ends.
A 2026 global study in Environment and Security found that countries experiencing armed conflict had significantly worse environmental performance, and estimated that recovery to pre-conflict levels of environmental performance could take 20 to 30 years. That is a cross-national finding, not a prediction for every conflict, but it makes the temporal dimension of environmental harm difficult to ignore.
Extraction and pollution follow different pathways, but can also erode the conditions of everyday life. They can alter water, air, soil, food systems, livelihoods, and local control over land and resources. Climate change adds another layer by changing the physical conditions within which communities, institutions, and ecosystems must adapt.
The World Meteorological Organization's State of the Global Climate 2025 confirms that 2015 to 2025 were the hottest 11 years on record. It reports that 2025 was approximately 1.43 degrees Celsius above the 1850 to 1900 average, and that extreme heat, heavy rainfall, and tropical cyclones disrupted interconnected societies and economies.
NASA explains the physical basis of the warming trend, while the Met Office summarizes how climate change affects weather, oceans, ice, ecosystems, and human systems.
These are not only environmental indicators. They are changes in the conditions under which people work, sleep, travel, care for one another, obtain food and water, and maintain a sense of continuity.
Place, identity, and the grief of a changing home
Environmental psychology has a vocabulary for some of what this does to people. Place attachment describes the emotional and social bonds people develop with homes, neighborhoods, landscapes, and ecosystems.
Solastalgia names distress associated with unwelcome change to a home environment while a person remains in place. A 2025 review of empirical research on solastalgia finds that the concept has been used across experiences of environmental change and points to the importance of place, people, and policy in understanding environmental distress.
Ecological grief describes grief related to experienced or anticipated losses of species, ecosystems, and meaningful landscapes. A 2025 BioScience forum places ecological grief within a One Health perspective and argues that it should be recognized, supported, and studied as part of socioecological resilience rather than automatically treated as pathology.
These concepts do not mean that every person will respond in the same way, or that distress should be assumed from environmental change alone. They help name a relationship between physical conditions and lived experience.
When a place changes, the loss may involve health, income, housing, food, safety, memory, culture, identity, and future possibility at the same time.
The WHO's 2026 fact sheet on heat and health describes heat as an environmental and occupational health hazard. It notes that heat stress can worsen cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, mental-health, and other health risks, and that vulnerability is shaped by both physiological and social conditions.
The 2025 Lancet Countdown report similarly documents worsening health impacts of climate change while emphasizing that effective action and adaptation can protect lives and livelihoods.
The experience of environmental loss is therefore not a secondary emotional response added to an ecological event. It is one way the event is experienced and understood.
At the same time, psychological language should not replace material analysis. Naming grief does not remove the need to examine who caused the damage, who had decision-making power, who is exposed, and what repair would require.
