Environmental Psychology Impact Initiative
IINVIRONMENT™ Climate Action:
Advancing organizational behavior change for a climate-resilient world.
IINVIRONMENT™ is an environmental psychology impact initiative by The BIIRGS focused on the behavioral, cultural, and organizational conditions that shape climate action.
Climate change is not only a technical, policy, or infrastructure challenge. It is also an organizational behavior challenge.
Organizations influence how people work, travel, consume, procure, communicate, collaborate, design, invest, and make decisions. They shape the systems, incentives, norms, environments, and accountability structures that determine whether climate-aligned action is practical, visible, supported, and sustained.
At this critical moment, awareness is no longer enough. The challenge is implementation: how environmental knowledge becomes everyday practice, how sustainability commitments become operational behavior, and how organizations redesign the conditions that shape action.
IINVIRONMENT™ applies environmental psychology, behavioral science, climate communication, and systems thinking to examine how climate behavior is formed, enabled, delayed, or blocked across organizational and social systems.
Through research briefings, open-access guides, articles, education, advocacy, and organizational pathways, IINVIRONMENT™ advances climate and environmental literacy for people and planet.
The initiative contributes to global priorities reflected in the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 13: Climate Action, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being.
At its heart is a simple proposition: the future of climate action depends not only on what societies know, but on what organizations make possible.
We only have one home.
Climate action requires new systems, behaviors, and evidence-led decisions that recognize our dependence on the natural world.
The IINVIRONMENT™ Model
Changes in how societies live, move, consume, and work could reduce global emissions by 40 to 70 percent by 2050. IINVIRONMENT™ works across three connected planes that translate environmental knowledge into practical understanding, public tools, and organizational change.
Together, these planes support climate and environmental literacy, strengthen behavior-informed action, and connect organizational practice to wider global priorities reflected in the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
An environmental psychology evidence base
Research-informed briefings translate environmental psychology, behavioral science, climate communication, and systems thinking into accessible insight. This evidence base helps explain how people perceive environmental risk, how natural and built environments influence behavior and well-being, and why awareness does not always translate into action.
Applied public tools
Open-access guides, articles, and educational resources help individuals, households, communities, and organizations understand the everyday behaviors and systems that shape environmental outcomes. These resources are designed to make climate and environmental literacy more practical, connecting knowledge to the choices, conditions, and organizational practices that influence people and planet.
An organizational pathway
Organizations sit at the center of climate behavior because they shape many of the systems through which environmental impact is produced. IINVIRONMENT™ supports organizations in moving beyond awareness campaigns toward behavior-informed systems of action: workplace cultures, procurement practices, employee engagement, communications, leadership, governance, operational design, and accountability structures that make climate-aligned behavior easier to understand, adopt, and sustain.
This pathway helps organizations examine how everyday decisions can contribute to more sustainable, resilient, and adaptive futures.
