Media Capture is the next area of inquiry in BIIRGS Eye View™ Talks, exploring how influence, incentives, and institutional arrangements can shape information environments and public discourse.
How do media ownership and funding structures shape the news we encounter and influence how issues that enter public consciousness are framed?
In this 60-minute virtual session, participants will examine media capture through a systems lens, considering how ownership and funding arrangements, economic incentives, and structures of influence can create pressures and dependencies that matter for editorial independence, public discourse, and democratic wellbeing.
The discussion will also situate these questions within the wider information environment, considering how digital platforms, economic interests, algorithms, and audience-targeting practices can influence what news people see, who sees it, and how it is understood.
